Der stark bedrohte Europäische Aal begeht in seinem Leben zwei mal eine unglaubliche Reise. Zu Beginn seines Lebens, als Larve, schlüpft der Aal in der Sargassosee im Atlantik - und schwimmt von dort 5000 km weit zur europäischen Küste. Flussaufwärts gelangt er ins Inland und erreicht so sogar stehende Gewässer in Europa.
Allerdings schafft er es nicht auf eine natürliche Weise in den Attersee.
Jahre später beginnt die Rückkehr in den Atlantik; bei starkem Regen wagt sich der Aal aus den stehenden Gewässern und überquert Grasflächen um in Bäche und Flüsse zu gelangen welche schließlich wieder ins Meer münden.
The European eel is a critically endangered species and commits itself to an amazing journey two times in its life. As a larvae it hatches in the Sargasso sea in the Atlantic ocean and takes on the 5000 km travel to the European coast. From there it swims upstream the estuaries to finally reach some inland habitat such as lakes or rivers.
Attersee however is not a natural habitat of the European eel.
After maturing, the Eel will return to the Sargassum Sea: the long journey back starts with returning to rivers that flow into the ocean. If necessary, the eel will come out of lakes and cross grass planes during rainy nights to reach creeks or rivers that culminate into the Atlantic ocean.
