Bei diesem jungen Hornhecht sieht man die Eigenheit der Spezies - ein schneller wachsender Unterkiefer der zu Beginn der Reifung länger ist als der Oberkiefer. Sobald ausgewachsen werden beide die gleiche Länge erreicht haben.
During its growth, the juvenile houndfish has a longer jaw (superior orientation of the mouth, see picture!) and teeth facing the anterior which is specific to only this species. The adult fish will develop pre-maxillary and mandible to the same length (terminal mouth) and the orientation of the teeth will shift to a straight position.
